BC Arc Celebrates Successes at Annual Meeting
By Andy McKeever, iBerkshires Staff
02:30AM / Monday, November 05, 2018

Awards were given to those individuals who made great progress in the last year. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Those with autism, brain injuries or who are developmentally challenged should be treated just like everybody else and Berkshire County Arc tries to do just that.   Through numerous programs throughout the county, BC Arc doesn't just provide support and advocacy for those people, they work hard to integrate them back into the world.    "What would we be without BC Arc? What would we be if you weren't here? We'd be a community that doesn't take care of all of us, it doesn't give every single one of us an opportunity to live the life we want

Guest Column: We Are Too Great to Hate
By James F. Birge, Guest Column
01:56PM / Saturday, November 03, 2018
As the president of a public institution of higher education, I have the unique opportunity to hear from many voices of those who represent the next generation. It should come as no surprise that there are myriad concerns coming through in those voices about the state of our country.   Between the Trump administration's seeking to restrict Title IX's definition of gender to "a person's status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth," bombs being sent to officials affiliated with the Democratic Party, and shooting violence fueled by the increasing volume of hateful, racist, anti-Semitic, and ideological propaganda

Caccaviello's Team Holds Final Standout as Election Day Approaches
By Andy McKeever, iBerkshires Staff
06:24AM / Saturday, November 03, 2018

Caccaviello supporters stand on every corner of the busy intersection. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Amanda Hamilton didn't personally know William Catalano but she knew the family.   She said she knows Catalano's father very well and refers to the Catalanos as family friends. Her father, Tim Hamilton, said the two families grew up together. Catalano was recently killed and they want justice.   They believe if Paul Caccaviello wins the district attorney race, justice will come. Caccaviello is currently seeking election as a write-in for district attorney and on Friday the Hamiltons introduced themselves and asked if they could hold a sign during a standout the campaign

Letter: Moran Much More Experienced for Register of Deeds
Letter to the Editor,
07:00PM / Friday, November 02, 2018

To the Editor:

I am writing this letter to support Debbie Moran in her candidacy for the Northern Berkshire Register of Deeds.

In looking at both candidates, one might say that they both have significant experience in the office, with both having over 20 years, and Debbie having the most with 26-plus years in the office, but to examine deeper and look at what positions have been held during that time that really tell the whole story.

While her opponent is a simply a clerk within the office, Debbie holds the position of first assistant register of deeds. This in and of itself is a significant variation between the two and one that should be looked at very closely. While a clerk does have

Letter: Caccaviello Offers Leadership, Continuity
Letter to the Editor,
01:12PM / Friday, November 02, 2018

To the Editor:

As a respite care foster parent for nine years for children who have been traumatized by violence and/or sexual assault; as a crime victim myself; as an elected School Committee member (winning as a write-in) and a former Fair Housing commissioner; I know the work that Paul Caccaviello and the staff of the Berkshire district attorney's office have done and are doing. I know this because I have had first-hand experience with their programs, and I believe they are not to be taken lightly or denigrated.

As Berkshire district attorney, Paul Caccaviello has already made exceptional decisions to sustain and enhance these programs; and, at the same time, create new programs

Letter: Harrington Right Person for DA
Letter to the Editor,
01:00PM / Friday, November 02, 2018

To the Editor:

It was supposed to be easy.

The position of district attorney in Berkshire County was his to be had. It was set up so well. A shady backroom deal between the 14-year veteran DA and the Republican governor ... an early retirement of the 14-year veteran to allow him to run as the incumbent ... and a last minute switch to the Democratic Party to ensure the vote in the heavy Democrat/Democrat-leaning county. All the "right" political moves were made. He thought he was a shoo-in ... but then, something happened:

Andrea Harrington announced her campaign to run for Berkshire County district attorney. She embraced the extremely popular Criminal Justice Reform

MassPIRG Pushing to Increase Voter Turnout at MCLA
By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
02:27AM / Friday, November 02, 2018

MCLA student Ari Battaini, MassPIRG coordinator, speaks with Mayor Thomas Bernard and college President Jamie Birge after the presentation. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — It's a given that young people don't vote. Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts is hoping to buck the trend.    In one good sign, the nearly two dozen students and others attending a voter information session on Wednesday, at least those of voting age, raised their hands to indicate they were registered and would be voting on Tuesday.    While turnout was low in the last mid-terms in 2014, only 16 percent, MCLA students turned out in numbers of 47 percent and 55 percent for the presidential

The Independent Investor: Time to Check Your Risk Tolerance
By Bill Schmick,
06:47PM / Thursday, November 01, 2018
It is a good time to take a reality check on how aggressively you are invested. The 6.9 percent decline in the S&P 500 Index over October was gut-wrenching. But entirely within the realm of probability given the historical data. Here are some questions to ask.   Did you find yourself checking your investment portfolios every day? How about every hour? Did you have trouble focusing on other, possibly more important, things like your job, or your family and friends? Was it more difficult to sleep at night, or did you lay awake worrying about the markets?   How much time did you spend checking the averages and listening to the talking heads on television or in the print media?

'The Old Man & the Gun': The Antihero & the Movie Star
By Michael S. Goldberger, iBerkshires Film Critic
01:31PM / Thursday, November 01, 2018
If movies were cherished trinkets, director David Lowery's "The Old Man & the Gun," based on a true story and starring Robert Redford as the gentlemanly, senior citizen bank robber, Forrest Tucker, would deserve a place of honor in your cigar box. It is at once a sympathetically laced portrait of the legendary stickup man/jail escapist extraordinaire and a nostalgia-evoking paean to one of the last great movie stars.    We are warmly invited to again marvel at how Redford's handsomeness and signature humanitarianism have always seemed so magically inseparable.    We hook up with Forrest just shortly after his astonishing, much heralded escape from

Ladley Remembered for Fight, Family, Fealty to Berkshire County Sports Community
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires.com Sports
10:08AM / Thursday, November 01, 2018
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Ed Ladley was remembered Wednesday evening as a giant of the Berkshire County sporting community.   The New England Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, legendary Wahconah boys basketball coach and educator died on Wednesday. And as word of his passing got around the county coaching fraternity, one word was on everyone's lips: competitor.   "Even when his son, Timmy, played for me my first year at Pittsfield, I remember him yelling at his players because Timmy had five 3s against Wahconah," said Ron Wojcik, now the girls basketball coach at Hoosac Valley.   "Timmy, at the time, was one of our best if not our best player, and [Ed

Berkshire Ambulance, Emergency Room Officials Oppose Question 1
Staff Reports, iBerkshires Staff
02:28AM / Thursday, November 01, 2018

Heads of local ambulance services and emergency department officials gathered at County Ambulance on Wednesday to express the reasons for the opposition to Question 1.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The phrase "holding the wall" hasn't really been used much in describing emergency medical services in Berkshire County. But, local EMS providers say that could be a real possibility if Question 1 is passed.   The term is used to describe the amount of time a patient is in an ambulance waiting to be ushered into the emergency department than is absolutely necessary. Ambulance companies don't want to be "holding the wall" but instead getting the rig back

Harrington Rallies Base to Start Final Week Of DA's Race
By Andy McKeever, iBerkshires Staff
05:02PM / Wednesday, October 31, 2018

Harrington's husband Timothy Walsh reflected on the campaign and thanked the crowd for the support of Harrington and their entire family.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — It is the final week in the district attorney's race and those in Andrea Harrington's camp are as energetic as ever.   The campaign held a rally Tuesday exactly one week before the general election for a final push to get out the vote.   The event was part fundraiser -- goodwill donations were accepted -- and part organizing as campaigner staffers sorted out volunteers for sign holding on election day, and a part rally to energize those supporters.    "I did not run
