Grant Supports Ecological Restoration and Climate Resilience in the Berkshires

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On behalf of the Berkshire Clean, Cold and Connected (BCCC) Restoration Partnership, the Housatonic Valley Association (HVA) has entered into a three-year Cooperative Agreement with the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game (DFG) Division of Ecological Restoration (DER) to support healthy aquatic systems and address climate change in Berkshire County.   The Cooperative Agreement is expected to provide approximately $350,000 in grant funding to support a new BCCC Restoration Partnership Coordinator position based in HVA's Stockbridge office, and further aquatic habitat enhancement projects like culvert replacement and stream restoration.   Funds

Moderate Spring Weather In Store This Week

Temperatures will slowly inch up to the low 60s this week but expect a mix of cloudy skies and sun.   Wednesday, April 20 will be sunny, but temperatures will only top out at 51, predicts Accuweather.   Expect cooler temperatures overnight with a low of 28.   Thursday will be a bit warmer with a high of 59. The day should start sunny but expect cloud cover in the afternoon with some brief rain showers.   Friday should be nice with mostly sunny skies and a high of 61. Expect the same thing Saturday, April 23.   Sunday should be cloudier. Temperatures should linger in the high 50s - low 60s.

State Police Chase on MassPike Ends With Suspect in Custody

STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — State Police shut down a section of the Massachusetts Turnpike on Wednesday in pursuit of a car allegedly stolen by an Illinois man.   The chase started at about 7:30 and ended with suspect is in custody as of 9:20 a.m.   Authorities tweeted out updates after closing the westbound lane and then the eastbound lane near Exit 3 around 8:30. Images from the State Police Air Wing showed numerous cruisers surrounding a vehicle. Old Time Fiddle by Ear Workshop at Dewey Hall

SHEFFIELD, Mass. — In this workshop Aaron Jonah Lewis will teach old time fiddle by ear on Friday April 22 with a workshop from 5:30 to 6:30 pm and a concert at 7:30.    The old time fiddle styles of the Appalachian mountains are characterized by their syncopated bowing patterns and driving rhythms. GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — The Berkshire Bach Society continues its season on April 23, 2022 at 4 p.m. with organist Peter Sykes playing the great Roosevelt Organ at the First Congregational Church.    This is the second of two organ recitals presented by Berkshire Bach this season that provide an opportunity to explore the capabilities of two historic Berkshires instruments: Johnson & Son organ from 1893 and the Roosevelt organ from 1883.   Peter Sykes presents compositions by Bach and his followers—Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Reger—that showcase the organ that at its installation was considered "the finest in America."

Seasonal Safety Reminder: Be Aware of Mulch Fire Hazards

STOW, Mass. —State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey offered a fire safety reminder to homeowners and others who plan on using mulch in upcoming landscaping projects.   "Every spring, firefighters across Massachusetts respond to mulch fires on commercial and residential properties," State Fire Marshal Ostroskey said. "These include fires that start with cigarettes and other smoking materials. Schiff and Katherine Westgate.   A resident of Lenox, Schiff is the national director of LIFE & LEGACY a program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, which assists organizations in building their endowment. For 12 years, Schiff was the executive director of the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires, and she previously worked as an administrator with the former Berkshire Children and Families (now 18 Degrees). Williamstown's Boyd 20th in Age Group at Boston Marathon

BOSTON, Mass. -- Williamstown's Stephanie Boyd placed 20th in her age group on Monday in the 126th running of the Boston Marathon.   Boyd covered the 26.2-mile course in 3 hours, 37 minutes, 40 seconds, maintaining a pace of 8:18 per mile to finished 20th in the women's 60-64 division.   The women's 60-64 age group had 450 finishers.   A pair of runners from Kenya won the event, which celebrated its return to the Patriots Day holiday for the first time since 2019.   Evans Chebet took the men's title in a time of 2:06:51.
