Elizabeth Freeman Monument Unveiled on Her Freedom Anniversary

Deval Patrick, gathered at Old Parish Church on Sunday afternoon for the unveiling of a monument to civil rights pioneer Elizabeth Freeman exactly 241 years to the day that she won her freedom in court.   Freeman's story may be well-known in the Berkshires but not so much elsewhere. Sheffield's Harden Garners Medals

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sheffield resident John-Michael Harden this month earned a gold medal at the DuPage Open figure skating tournament.   Harden finished on top of a five-competitor field in the novice men combined division.   He posted a score of 39.67 with a one-point decduction after a program that included a triple lutz and a triple salchow with a triple toeloop.   Harden, who skates for the Connecticut-based Charter Oak Figure Skating Club, also took home a bronze medal in a 10-skater field in the novice men combined at the Cranberry Open in Norwood, Mass., this month.   Harden is ranked third in New England and seventh in the nation in his class by U.S. Figure

Sheffield Resident Injured in a Motor Vehicle Accident

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — A Sheffield resident was injured Wednesday afternoon after their vehicle crashed into the Dollar Tree Store in the Barrington Plaza.    According to police, the driver struck a sign, a parked vehicle, and then rolled over and crashed into the front of the store in their 2006 Subaru Forester.   The driver, who was not identified, was taken to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield by Southern Berkshire EMS.   The Fire Department also responded to the accident at approximately 12:52 p.m.    The cause of the crash is under investigation by Officer Andres Huertas and Officer Sam  Stolzar.   Anyone who witnessed the incident

Great Barrington Road-Stream Management Plan Available

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — The Housatonic Valley Association (HVA), in partnership with the town of Great Barrington, has produced a Road-Stream Crossing Management Plan that identifies the highest priority road-stream crossing replacement projects in Great Barrington. 

This document is a guide for how road infrastructure projects should be designed to alleviate stream flooding and to ensure aquatic wildlife corridors are improved. Project funding is provided by the Housatonic River NRD Trustees and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

Veteran Spotlight: Dr. Charles Parton

NEW MARLBOROUGH, Mass. — Dr. Charles Parton served his country in World War II as a 2nd class pharmacist's mate for nearly four years.   At 97 years of age, his memory is still sharp as a tack. He went to naval training in Newport, R.I., and remembered "being the last group to go through there. It was great. W.E.B Du Bois Center to Host Elizabeth Freeman Roundtable

SHEFFIELD, Mass. — The W.E.B. Du Bois Center for Freedom and Democracy of Great Barrington will present a roundtable discussion on the life and legacy of Elizabeth Freeman, the first enslaved African American to successfully sue for her freedom in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The roundtable will take place Friday, Aug. 19, at 4 p.m. at Dewey Hall. A reception will follow the roundtable.

This the first in a series of events honoring Freeman's journey to freedom that will take place in Sheffield from Aug. 19-21. A full schedule of events can be found here.

Overnight Repair Operations on I-90 Week of Aug. 8

LEE, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will be conducting overnight guardrail and bridge repair operations on I-90 eastbound and westbound in Lee and Becket the week of Aug. 8.

The guardrail repairs will take place from mile marker 8.0 to mile marker 12.0 in Lee and Becket. The bridge repairs will take place at mile marker 8.5 in Lee.

The guardrail work will be conducted beginning Monday, Aug. 8, at 7:00 p.m. and concluding the next morning by 5:00 a.m. The overnight hour work continues each night through Friday morning, Aug.12.

The bridge repair work will be conducted on Monday, Aug. 8, and on Tuesday, Aug. 9, during overnight hours from 7:00 p.m.

State Auditor Candidate Diana DiZoglio Urges PILOT Reform

LEE, Mass. — Diana DiZoglio says the state's payment in lieu of taxes program, or PILOT, should be fully funded, especially with the Bay State having a 2023 budget surplus totaling about $3.6 billion.

The Democratic candidate for state auditor visited October Mountain on Tuesday to speak on PILOT reform, which is a priority in her 17-Point Social Justice and Equity Audit Plan.

The event celebrated scholarship recipients who  have taken the advantage of tutoring in English and citizen test preparation.  Nineteen Keator scholarship recipients have become American citizens. Agricultural Commissioner Visits Berkshire County Farms

TYRINGHAM, Mass. — Agricultural Commissioner John Lebeaux visited three Berkshire County farms on Wednesday to learn about their diverse practices.   The tour began at Holiday Brook Farm in Dalton, then went to Robinson Farm in Becket, and ended at Woven Roots Farm in Tyringham.   "We're always impressed with the diversity of [agriculture] in Berkshire County," Lebeaux said.   Nonprofit Berkshire Grown organizes the farm tour each year with the commissioner.
