Ruth Witherell, 82

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Ruth (Scace) Witherell, 82 of Pittsfield, Mass., and formerly of Williamstown died Wednesday August 7, 2019, at Berkshire Medical Center.



She was born in Pittsfield, Mass., on March 10, 1937, daughter of Charles and Ellen (Blackmer) Scace. She attended schools in Pittsfield and Dalton and graduated from the former Dalton High School in 1957. She also completed nursing courses in Lynn, Mass.



Ruth was employed as a nurse at several area nursing homes and also worked at the former Plunkett Hospital in Adams. She last operated the Rainbows End in Pittsfield from 1970 to 1993.



Ruth was a member and past president of the Emblem Club in North Adams and in Pittsfield and also held several offices in the state Emblem Club. She was also a member, past president and 5oth Reunion chair of the Scace Family Association which was founded by her grandfather, Charles H. Scace Sr. Ruth also was a member of the North Adams Eagles Ladies Auxiliary and the 59er's Club.



She was the widow of James Alan Witherell, who died on July 29, 2009. They were married on April 14, 1962.



Survivors include one daughter, Kathryn Witherell of Waseca, Minn.; two sons, James A. Witherell Jr. and Kent Witherell, both of Pittsfield; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Betsy Canedy of Hancock, Mass.; one brother, Charles Scace III of Summerville, S.C..; and nieces and nephews.



She was predeceased by two sons, Keith Witherell and Eugene Witherell; and one sister, Marie Balardini.



Funeral notice: The funeral for Ruth Witherell will be Wednesday, August 14, 2019, at 11 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St. North Adams, MA. Burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery in South Williamstown. A calling hour at the funeral home will be Wednesday morning from 10-11 a.m. Memorial donations May be made to the Alzheimer's Association in care of the funeral home.
