LANESBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Lanesborough Bulldogs Cal Ripken Baseball all-star team will look to defend its Western Mass State Championship when the tournament gets under way on Friday at Bill Laston Field.   The Bulldogs and South Berkshire will both be in action in the tournament’s first games at 5:30 p.m. Host Lanesborough will take on Westminster while South Berkshire plays Narragansett as the teams try to stay in the winner’s bracket of the double-elimination tourney.   The action continues on Saturday at 9 a.m. and Sunday at 10 with the state title game set for Tuesday, July 5, at 5:30. The Berkshire Mountaineers seventh grade AAU girls basketball team went 4-0 to win a recent tournament in Portland Maine.   The team is 19-4 with one more tournament left in its season.   The sixth/seventh-grade team includes: Delaney Babcock, Abby Bird, Rylie Bishop, Abby Hugger, Alyssa Garabedian, Jayden Johnson, Sharaya Keele, Averie McGrath, Kaylee Tatro, Grace Towler and Rylynn Witek.   The team is coached by Shaun McGrath and Jeff Johnson.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - The final tryout for the Bay State Games Western Massachusetts girls basketball team will be Wednesday, June 22, at McCann Tech from 6 to 8 p.m.   Interested players must participate in at least one tryout to be considered for the team, which will compete at the Bay State Games July 15-17 at the Reggie Lewis Center in the Boston neighborhood of Roxbury Crossing.   The team is open to all girls in ninth through 12th grades (2016 graduates welcome) who either live in Massachusetts or attend a Massachusetts school.   The cost to try out is $37. The Northern Berkshire Phenoms put the bow on their third season over the Father's Day weekend.   The 17-and-under team finished second in the varsity division at the inaugural Summer Heat Check Invitational tournament hosted by the Boys and Girls Club of Pittsfield. The 14-and-under team kept busy too, winning the 8th-grade division in Pittsfield and losing in the semi-finals at the Basketball Summer Tip-Off Classic in Springfield.    After a short break from the winter season, the two teams hit the gym again in April to play a six-tournament schedule. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Eric Leitch went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI to lead the Cages Baseball Club Under-22 team to a 7-4 win over Averill Park in the first half of a double-header on Saturday.   Averill Park came back to win Game 2, 6-5.   In the opener, Dominic DeFelice had a pair of hits, drove in three runs and stole a couple of bases for Cages.   Josh Jezouit got the win with 6-⅔ innings of work, striking out eight and allowing just two earned runs. LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The Hoffmann Bird Club of Western Massachusetts will host its fourth annual “Hoffmann Hackers Golf Classic,” which could otherwise be known as “The Longest Bird,” at the Donnybrook Country Club, 775 Williamstown Road on Friday, June 24, with a “shotgun start” at 4 p.m.

The public is welcome to participate.  The 9-hole golf tournament is a fundraiser for Berkshire County’s premier Ornithological Society.  There will be a rain date of July 1.

The entry fee for the event will be $40 per head, which includes placement on a team, 9 holes of golf, with carts included, and a barbeque/cook-out following the event.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — "Running with The Law" returned to the streets this past weekend with runs planned every Saturday up to a community road race planned for June.

Last fall, it was hard to miss North Adams Police officers running downtown with an entourage of nearly 20 elementary school students.

This same program, Running with The Law, returned Saturday for the spring session with a 5-kilometer road race planned for Saturday, June 11, to benefit Pop Cares, a non-profit organization that supports local cancer patients.
