11:35AM / Monday, October 31, 2016

Spooktacular: The Cheshire Elementary School PTG hosted its annual Halloween Dance Party on Friday, Oct. 21, in the school auditorium. DJ Bob Heck of Bob Heck Entertainment played music and games with the kids. The kids danced and played the night away.

The Hoosac Valley Cheerleaders came and volunteered their time to help run the game and craft tables. Many parent volunteers helped out to make this such a successful event. Each child came in their favorite costume and some parents dressed up as well. There was a large assortment of donated baked goods and treats. Each child received a pumpkin as they left and the pumpkins were donated by Whitney's Farm.

Know about voting: State Rep. Gailanne Cariddi recently welcomed town clerks Haley Meczywor (Adams) and Mary Kennedy (Williamstown) to her community television program, "Something You Should Know." The conversation focused on voting, particularly early voting and the integrity of the voting process.

The program will air in North Adams on Tuesday at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., Thursday at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Northern Berkshire Community Television.

Williamstown residents should check their local listings on WilliNet. Early voting ends Friday, Nov. 4.

Food For Fines: The Berkshire Athenaeum will offer a modified fines amnesty from Tuesday, Nov. 1, through Wednesday, Nov.30. During this four-week period, the library will accept non‑perishable food items in lieu of paying fines for overdue books.

Food will be collected in boxes located at the Adult Circulation Desk and at the Children’s Service Desk.  When "paying" off a fine with a donated food item, a staff librarian should be alerted prior to depositing the item into the collection boxes.  Food will be accepted not only for payment of overdue fines for items currently in circulation, but also may be applied to outstanding overdue fines from other transactions. Please note the replacement costs of lost or damaged materials may not be resolved by donated food.

During the amnesty period, in addition to food brought in lieu of fines, the athenaeum will encourage general donations of food not associated with overdue library books.  All donated food will be presented to the Rotary Club of Pittsfield as part of the organization’s annual food collection drive.

Doing good: Every year WAM Theatre donates a portion of the box office proceeds from their fall Main Stage production to agencies that benefit women and girls locally, nationally or internationally. The success of their co-production with the Berkshire Theatre Group of "The Bakelite Masterpiece" by Kate Cayley enabled the company to present their largest donation yet to their 2016 beneficiaries - the Berkshire Immigrant Center (BIC) and Suzi Banks Baum’s New Illuminations Project.

Since its founding in 2010, WAM Theatre has now donated more than $30,000 to 12 nonprofit organizations. This year’s total of  $9,000 total was divided with $5,500 going to BIC and $3,500 going to Suzi Banks Baum's initiative in Gyumri, Armenia. In keeping with WAM Theatre’s double philanthropic mission, a gift presentation was made following the closing performance on Oct. 23.

Banks Baum will use her donation to pay women artists in Armenia a stipend for their work as visual artists. The arts are not an accepted field of work for women in Armenia, where they are culturally limited in how they can support themselves and their families. The Berkshire Immigrant Center will use their funds to help women from abused households navigate a path to citizenship in the United States.
