Generations come together in music, conversation and dance to celebrate and to help break down generational stereotypes and barriers.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Drury High School Current Events classes will host the annual Senior Citizens Prom from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, at the Drury High School gymnasium for an evening of fun.

The 2017 theme is "Bash on the Bayou” to help celebrate the southern carnival and Mardi Gras.

For the past 23 years, the Drury High School History/Contemporary Issues/Sociology Classes have studied generational differences, sociological impact and ways to help bridge the generational divide. Their research and curriculum culminates with the planning and implementation of a service learning project – a prom for senior citizens – that engages elderly residents in the community. This prom is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities.

Generations come together in music, conversation and dance to celebrate and to help break down generational stereotypes and barriers. Throughout the academic year students study inter-generational curriculum with their coursework and then host a light dinner/dance for the community’s senior citizens (mostly residents from local nursing homes, retirement communities, housing facilities and grandparents of students).

The school's gymnasium is transformed into a themed-based wonderland, a light dinner fare is provided, students make baked goods, a disc jockey provides musical entertainment, and students and the seniors mingle and dance the night away. The prom provides a chance for members of the northern Berkshire community to reminisce while enjoying the music and reliving their earlier days and feeling special. In addition, the students develop activities for the seniors to participate in including trivia contests and providing old photographs to look through.

The evening concludes with the selection of a King/Queen and Court, and countless stories and life lessons. The event is free and open to the public.
