Green Hall at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston.

Hannah King of Pittsfield.
Seniors in the Lasell University Honors program shared self-designed research components with the Newton campus community at a recent showcase, including two local students.

Allison Wheeler of Adams shared "Plastic Planet: Combating Global Pollution Through Politics and Personal Accountability."

"Plastic bag bans are being instituted across the state, the country, and the world, and the grocery store I work at is located in a city with a plastic bag ban," she said. "As an environmental studies student, I am always asking myself, 'How do you influence the average person to adapt environmentally-friendly habits?' The second part of my componetn study will compare the data sets I have collected and make an observation on how finances play a role in shaping society's habits."

Hannah King of Pittsfield shared "Ellis Island and Immigration Today."

"This project takes a historical approach to analyze the heavily-debated issue of immigration to the United States. It explores the reasoning behind the influx of immigrants from western Europe throughout the late eighteenth18th and early 19th centuries and the effects this had on American society. This is then connected to the immigration debate surrounding U.S. politics today. This project finds there are many similarities that exist between these two historical events that shaped, and are shaping, American culture."

Honors students must complete four components over the course of their studies.

"Lasell's Honors Program is unique in its thorough incorporation of this high level of creative, individualized, custom investigation that is piloted by the students," said Stephanie Athey, director of the Honors Program and associate professor of humanities.

Michael Carpinello of North Adams, a junior majoring in electrical and computer engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, was a member of a student team that recently completed a hands-on research project through the WPI project center in Australia. The project was titled "Sharing Stories and Impact of the Aiming High Educational Support Program." In their project summary, the students wrote, "Our team observed program participants and methods; identified positive outcomes; researched effective storytelling, fundraising, and videography techniques; created a promotional video; and lastly, provided recommendations for future assessment of social impact."

At WPI, all undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that applies science and technology to addresses an important societal need or issue. About two-thirds of students complete a project at one of the university's 50-plus off-campus project centers, which are located around the world. A signature element of the innovative undergraduate experience at WPI, the project-based curriculum offers students the opportunity to apply their scientific and technical knowledge to develop thoughtful solutions to real problems that affect the quality of people's lives-and make a difference before they graduate.

"The WPI project-based curriculum's focus on global studies brings students out of the classroom and their comfort zones and into the global community to apply their knowledge and to solve problems," said professor Kent Rissmiller, interim dean of the WPI Interdisciplinary and Global Studies Division.

Lydia Barnaba of Great Barrington, a junior, portrayed St. Catherine of Siena/Lydia in Assumption College's presentation of Broadway musical "Godspell" in sold-out shows on Feb. 28 and 29.
